SOAS is supporting the first ever Universities Week (14-20 June 2010), which aims to highlight the vital role universities play in the UK.

The campaign, organised by Universities UK, has the support of more than 100 universities and organisations, who will help raise the profile of the higher education sector through a variety of local and national events and activities.

As part of the week, SOAS will host a debate on the value of higher education, featuring students from the Bloomsbury colleges.  The debate will be chaired by University of London Union President Nizam Uddin, a SOAS alumnus.

The latest in the 'Your World, Your Voice!' series, the debate is aimed at sixth form and further-education students. Speakers from SOAS, Birbeck and other Bloomsbury colleges will debate topics including the future of higher education under the coalition government and job prospects for graduates in the current economic climate.

The debate will be held on Friday 18th June from 2 to 4 pm at SOAS' Khalili Lecture Theatre. The event is free but requires registration. To reserve places or get more information, call 020 7898 4043 or email wpteam@soas.ac.uk.

The School will also promote Universities Week at other SOAS events throughout the week.

Nationwide, universities, businesses, higher education organisations, charities and many others will host events and activities to help drive recognition of the impact universities have on the regional and national economy, culture and society.
