Four SOAS Students Named 'Future Leaders'
8 September 2010
Four SOAS students have been selected as Future Leaders 2010-11, a list of "100 of Britain's most outstanding new black graduates".
The four students are Symeon Brown (BA Economics and Politics 2010), Rukayah Sarumi (BA Economics and the Study of Religion 2010), Onyema Ugorji (LLB School of Law 2010) and Nunons Tagoe-Borllons (BA Economics and Law 2010).
The Future Leaders list is a project of Powerful Media, a media consultancy. Nominations are open to students of African or African Caribbean descent living in the UK, and winners are selected by a panel of judges who look for academically accomplished students who have also done "something impressive outside of their studies".
Among the SOAS students' accomplishments:
- Symeon Brown is the founder and chair of Haringey Young People Empowered, which works to stop violence among young people in the council;
- Rukayah Sarumi was active in numerous causes and public service organisations at SOAS, including serving as the Student Unions' Black Students Officer for two consecutive years;
- Nunons Tagoe-Borllons was a student ambassador for the University of London, actively involved in SOAS' Widening Participation events and a volunteer for public service projects at SOAS and in the community;
- Onyema Ugorji, a first class graduate of the School of Law, volunteered for a variety of local charities and community schemes, including mentoring 15 students from Westminster City School for Boys. He plans to pursue a master's degree in law and finance at Oxford University.
