Damon Albarn Performs at Students Union Gig
29 September 2010
Damon Albarn, frontman for Blur and Gorillaz, put in a surprise appearance at the newly renovated SOAS Students Union Tuesday night.
Albarn was one of the "very special guests" at a tribute concert for a friend, the late Lobi Traoré, a Malian guitarist who died in June. Proceeds from the concert, which was hosted by SOAS Music and a London indie music label, are to go to Traoré's family.
Students whipped out their mobile phones when Albarn appeared, and Twitter was instantly abuzz with blurry photos and gushing tweets:
@mcfoy: Sat next to damon albarn in my SU. Couldn't love SOAS more if I tried.
@CaitlinCandela: At glasto I saw him headline standing in crowd of 150 000. At SOAS I sat on carpet by his feet in JCR.
The kora player Tunde Jegede also performed at the event, which ended in "an epic world music DJ set", in the words of SU Co-President Sebilio Uribe.
