A new academic centre for the study of Palestine launched on 1 March.
The inauguration was held in the Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre at 6pm.
Some of the centre’s academics spoke at the event, including Professor Gilbert Achcar and Dr Hassan Hakimian, along with Dr Karma Nabulsi and Professor Ilan Pappé.
Professor Gilbert Achcar said that the centre is another important addition to the School’s ever-expanding study of the Middle East. “Traditionally, SOAS has been a major site for research and teaching related to Palestine and so we found it indispensable to establish a Centre dedicated to these studies at the School, emulating the centres already created at Columbia University (New York) and the University of Exeter,” Achcar said.
The centre will be part of the London Middle East Institute (LMEI) and will promote research and teaching of Palestine, Palestinians, and the Israel-Palestine conflict across a range of disciplines. It will also bring together and publicise the range of work on Palestine underway at SOAS, fostering links between SOAS and other institutions in the UK and overseas.
