23 May 2012
The Arabic Language Academy in Cairo has elected Professor Abdel Haleem from the Department of the Languages and Cultures of Near and Middle East as its 'Corresponding Member' in Great Britain.
As a corresponding member, Professor Abdel Haleem will attend its annual general meeting, contribute to the journal of the Academy, keep the Academy informed about Arabic language and studies in the UK and facilitate collaboration between the Academy and SOAS on publications and events.
Speaking of his appointment, Professor Abdel Haleem said: "I am very pleased to be elected as a member of this highly prestigious Academy and will think of ways to strengthen the relationship between the Academy and SOAS."
The Arabic Language Academy in Cairo is the leading language academy across the Arab-speaking world. It was founded by Royal Decree in 1932 and included among its 20 members the second professor of Arabic at SOAS, Sir Hamilton A. Gibb. As the membership increased, members not residing in Egypt were termed ‘corresponding members’.
