18 June 2012

Professor Mashood Baderin of the School of Law has completed his first mission as the UN Independent Expert on the human rights situation in the Sudan, following his appointment to the role earlier this year.

During his visit from 10-14 June, he met with the Government of the Republic of the Sudan, its international partners and other key groups, including non-governmental civil society organisations and human rights defenders.

“The objective of these meetings was to identify the technical assistance and capacity building needs of the Sudan that will help the country fulfil its human rights obligations,” said Baderin.

“Throughout my visit, I reiterated my commitment to independence, impartiality and transparency as required under the Code of Conduct for Special Procedure Mandate-Holders of the Human Rights Council.  My ultimate aim is to find the best ways in which to improve the human rights situation that would eventually be reflected positively in the lives of the ordinary individuals in the country.”

He concluded: “Despite the very challenging nature of this mandate, it can be positively achieved through consistent, focused and positive engagement with the Government within the framework of the UPR recommendations.”
