Two awards for Dr Tian Yuan Tan’s book on Kang Hai’s songs
4 December 2012
Dr Tian Yuan Tan’s recent book A Critical Edition of Kang Hai's Songs with Notes, and Two Essays published in 2011 was awarded second prize in both the 2011 National Excellent Classical Books Award and Excellent Classical Books of East China Region Award in China.
The book provides the first critical edition of Kang Hai’s (1475-1541) complete sanqu songs. It supersedes five existing modern editions of this influential writer as it includes, for the first time, the newly discovered 185 xiaoling songs and 82 song suites in a sixteenth-century collection widely believed to have been lost.
The SOAS senior lecturer in traditional Chinese literature and culture commented: “I am truly honoured to receive the awards and delighted that the book gained recognition from specialists in classical studies in China. I would also like to thank the British Academy and the Sino-British Fellowship Trust for funding the research project."
The National Excellent Classical Books Award is awarded by the Publishers Association of China to the best books published in the field of classical studies each year and the Excellent Classical Books of East China Region Award is selected by a panel of eleven specialists, based on nominations from thirteen publishers in the East China Region.
