Academic Development Directorate

Institutional Review under way

30 January 2013

SOAS’s Institutional Review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) is in progress.

Judgements will be made on the School’s threshold academic standards, the quality of students’ learning opportunities, the quality of its public information and its enhancement of students’ learning opportunities.

The Academic Development team, led by Dr Mandy Bentham, submitted key documentation - a Self-Evaluation Document, Student Written Submission and supporting evidence - to the QAA before Christmas.

Having considered this material, the Review team (three reviewers, including a student from another institution, and QAA officer support) made their first visit to SOAS on 22/23 January. They met with the Director, a group of key students and the Senior Management of the School. Feedback suggests that the meetings went well.

The QAA has now drawn up a schedule for the full Review visit in the week of 4 March and requested additional documentation to inform its conclusions. The schedule includes meetings with different groups of students and a range of academic and professional service staff. Work is currently underway to identify participants and pull together the necessary documentation. Briefings will be provided for all participants.

The School will be notified of the key findings two weeks after the March visit. Four weeks later, the full draft report will be made available.
