14 February 2013

CeDEP research fellow Colin Poulton plus colleagues from Overseas Development Institute (London), Leiden and Indonesia participated in workshops at National University of Rwanda in Butare/Huye (www.nur.ac.rw) and in Kigali. The latter brought together government, non-government and donor stakeholders in the agricultural sector and was attended by both the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Agnes Kalibata, and the Permanent Secretary, Ernest Ruzindaza. Drawing on the experiences of South-East Asian nations in the 1960s and 1970s, the workshop encouraged the government to further increase its investment in agriculture and rural development (already rising rapidly over the past five years) so as to accelerate the rate of poverty reduction in the country.

Mr. Poulton also met with CeDEP's latest Commonwealth Scholarship students, who are commencing their study of the MSc in Poverty Reduction: Policy and Practice this year. Eight Rwandan students have received scholarships in 2013, along with seven in Sierra Leone.
