IMF Africa adviser gives presentation at SOAS

4 March 2013

A senior advisor in the International Monetary Fund explores the challenges and opportunities of contemporary Africa at a presentation and discussion at SOAS on Monday 11 March.

Roger Nord is Deputy Director of the IMF’s African Department, overseeing country operations in East Africa and francophone West Africa. He also leads the work on natural resources. Previously, he was IMF mission chief for several African countries, including Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, and Gabon.
Mr Nord will give a presentation on the theme of ‘Africa – challenges and opportunities’ at a meeting in the Brunei Gallery, hosted by the Centre for African Studies.

Over the past 15-20 years, an increasing number of countries in Africa have been experiencing robust and sustained economic growth. During the recent global recession, many African countries proved quite resilient.

Mr Nord will ask what explains this strong economic performance. Is it just a reflection of high commodity prices or have African economies become more competitive? He will explore the roles played by new partners such as China and India. He will discuss the extent to which the high economic growth has been shared within African countries. And he will identify the priorities for the future. There will then be a discussion with the audience.

SOAS Law student, Komilla Chadha, who arranged the visit by Mr Nord, said: “This is a great opportunity to learn more about the activities of the IMF in Africa.  We will also schedule open time for informal discussions and networking after the presentation and discussion.”

The meeting, which starts at 3pm in the Brunei Gallery, is open to all staff and students.
