SOAS public lecture offers Fijian perspective on international security
4 March 2013
The High Commissioner of the Republic of Fiji to the United Kingdom, will give a Fijian perspective on international security and the Pacific Islands, in a public lecture organised by the student-led Pacific Island Society at SOAS, University of London tomorrow.
His Excellency Mr Solo Mara will deliver his lecture at 7:15pm on Tuesday 5 March as part of the London Ambassador series, organised by the Pacific Islands Society at SOAS.
The series brings together senior diplomats from the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) region with academics from the top universities in the United Kingdom.
The President of the Pacific Islands Society, Eddie Walsh, said: “The Pacific Islands Society believes the Asian century is not just about Asia. It clearly affects the wider Asia-Pacific region including the Pacific Islands. We think it’s natural then that our inaugural speaking series will address the topic of international security. Aside from the global economic crisis, there are few issues that compare in terms of supra-regional importance.”
Forthcoming lecturers in the series include:
Michael Walsh, Kiribati Honorary Consul to the United Kingdom, who speaks on the threat posed by climate change and other non-traditional security threats in the Pacific on Monday, March 11 at 7:15pm;
Papua New Guinea (PNG) High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, H.E. Winnie Anna Kiap, who conclude the first round of speakers on Tuesday, March 19 at 7:15pm.
The entire speaking series is free and open to the public - although priority will be given to students and faculty of U.K. universities. The London Ambassadors public lecture series takes place in the Khalili Lecture Theatre at the Russell Square campus of SOAS.
