SOAS lecturers lead on women's movements in the Middle East at WOW
8 March 2013
Professor Nadje Al-Ali and Professor Deniz Kandiyoti will discuss global feminism and the Middle East at the Women of the World (WOW) festival this weekend.
Taking place at London Southbank, both experts will be looking deeper at women’s movements in the Middle East and their relationship with women in the west.
Professor Al-Ali will be speaking this Saturday 9 March and Professor Kandiyoti will be featured as a panellist on Sunday 10 March.
Professor Al-Ali commented: “This year, my thoughts go to the women of Iraq, who, after 10 years after the invasion are challenged by ongoing insecurity, widespread gender-based violence and the feminisation of poverty. Despite these obstacles and problems, many women are not only trying to cope but mobilise for greater rights and equality.”
WOW is a festival of talks, debate, music, film and comedy celebrating women. The event kick-starts on International Women’s Day. Professor Al-Ali explains the importance of marking this occasion: “Over 100 years ago, women's rights activists pushed for the establishment of International Women's Day to mark struggle for women's rights and international solidarity amongst women.
“Today, in the UK and many countries around the globe, International Women's Day continues to be a very important celebration to mark women's achievements and their ongoing struggles for equality and social justice.”
