Higher languages workshop for London school pupils
London sixth-formers at SOAS' Step-On language workshop
3 April 2013
Sixth formers from schools all over London converged on SOAS, University of London for a conference on language studies in late March.
Part of SOAS' Step On programme, which supports state school pupils into higher education, the conference was delivered by current SOAS language students.
SOAS students Amarpal Khuttan, Katherine Eagle, Joseph Thomas and Glen Taylor, studying Japanese, Swahili and Hindi, gave the sixth formers an insight into study non-European languages at university level.
The day included a panel session with SOAS language graduates, workshops on how to choose a university course, the year abroad and succeeding in language studies. The students were joined by Lutz Marten, Professor of General and African Linguistics, who also spoke about languages and the benefits of language study.

Pupils came from: St Angela's and St Bonaventure's Sixth Form College, Newvic Sixth Form College (Newham); Walthamstow Academy (Walthamstow); Claremont Academy (Harrow); La Retraite, St Martin's in the Field (Lambeth); Robert Clack Sixth Form (Dagenham); Grey Coat Hospital (Westminster); Harris Academy (Merton); Anglo European School (Ingatestone); Shooters Hill Campus (Greenwich).
Marva Coudray, Head of Widening Participation at SOAS, said: "All our education outreach activities are designed to help students explore the breadth of opportunities available to them, and to realise their potential in HE. It was great to welcome such bright, enthusiastic sixth-formers to SOAS so that they could interact with our brilliant undergraduates!"
