China scholar meets SOAS alumni in Hong Kong and Singapore
4 April 2013
SOAS alumni based in Hong Kong and Singapore will meet one of the School’s distinguished China scholars at networking events in the two cities next week.
Professor Michel Hockx visits Hong Kong and Singapore as part of a delegation promoting SOAS and its new China Institute, as the School approaches its centenary year in 2016.
Michel Hockx, Professor of Chinese at SOAS and a specialist in Modern Chinese literature, will give a talk on contemporary Chinese Internet Culture. His talk, entitled ‘Inside the Great Firewall: Internet Culture in the People’s Republic of China’ will go beyond typical accounts of internet censorship in China, which tend to focus on what cannot appear online. Instead he will highlight what does appear online, and why it matters.
Professor Hockx said: “My talk is intended to showcase the independent critical stance that we as SOAS scholars can take on issues such as internet censorship, and to promote knowledge of the cultural riches that appear in China despite the censorship.”
Zeba Salman, Deputy Head of Development and Alumni Relations, who is part of the delegation, said: “We are looking forward to meeting our alumni in Hong Kong. This is a great opportunity for them to reconnect with current academics and with each other, and to hear about important developments at SOAS. The presentations will be followed by an alumni networking reception.”
