SOAS experts recognised for contribution to social sciences
5 April 2013
Professor of Development Studies Naila Kabeer has been conferred as an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS).
The honour is made to a handful of scholars each year in recognition of their research in social sciences.
Professor Kabeer is a world-renowned gender specialist and has published extensively on inter-related fields of gender, social exclusion, labour markets and livelihoods, social protection and citizenship.
Professor Kabeer commented: “I think getting recognition from one's peers is probably one of the greatest sources of satisfaction for any academic so of course, I am very pleased to have been given this award from the AcSS. And given that it signals increasing recognition by the Academy of the very important contribution made by Development Studies to the field of social sciences, I am also very pleased for the Development Studies department at SOAS and elsewhere."
Professorial Research Associate and member of the Governing Body, Professor Barbara Harriss-White, was also recognised as an Academician. Her research interests have developed from the economics of agricultural markets to India's socially regulated capitalist economy and corporate capital.
The Academy's mission is to promote excellence in and encourage the advancement of social science in the UK through research, education and services to the community. It also aims to disseminate information about the social sciences and what they contribute to society.
Comprised of more than 800 individual academicians and 44 learned societies, the Academicians are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors who are recognised for their contribution to the field of social science.
Director of SOAS Professor Paul Webley added: “Congratulations to both Professor Kabeer and Professor Harriss-White. This recognition is a real testament to the cutting-edge research carried out in the social sciences arena here at SOAS.”
The award to Professor Kabeer brings the grand total of AcSS in the School to seven. Other holders of this title include Professor Nirmala Rao, Professor Christine Oughton, Professor Laurence Harris, Professor Laixang Sun, Professor Tom Tomlinson and Professor Paul Webley.
