SOAS scholar appointed to Government’s Human Rights Advisory Group
23 May 2013
Mashood Baderin, a Professor of Law at SOAS, University of London, has been invited by the Foreign Secretary to join the Human Rights Advisory Group at the Foreign Office.
The group formed in 2010 was established to help Foreign Secretary William Hague ensure Foreign Office officials take account of external advice and perspectives in the conduct of UK foreign policy.
The group will focus on international issues of relevance to UK foreign policy, rather than domestic human rights questions.
Professor Baderin commented: "I am honoured and delighted to be invited by the Foreign Secretary to be a member of his Human Rights Advisory Group. I have accepted the invitation with a very high sense of responsibility and I look forward to contributing effectively to the important work of the Group in this important area of foreign policy."
There will be two meetings per year, which will be chaired by the Foreign Secretary. However, members of the group will also be consulted at other times on different aspects of human rights policy and invited to other meetings of interest at official level.
