Professor Christine Oughton, Head of the Department of Financial and Management Studies, commented on our students' high degree of satisfaction recorded by the 2013 National Student Survey: 'I am delighted that our students complete their BSc degrees in International Management highly satisfied with their learning experience. SOAS student satisfaction at highest level since NSS survey began
The 2013 National Student Survey (NSS) shows that SOAS, University of London has increased its overall student satisfaction by 4%. 88% of final year SOAS students say they were satisfied with the overall quality of their course, the highest level of satisfaction achieved since the survey began, and 4% above the sector average.
Run by Ipsos-MORI on behalf of the government, the survey helps future students choose their Universities and degrees to study. The 23 questions asked in the survey cover teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, personal development, overall satisfaction and the Students' Union.
Departments that show the highest levels of overall satisfaction among final year SOAS students are Anthropology (96%), DeFiMS (95%) Development Studies (93%), and Linguistics (92%).
Satisfaction with teaching received the best result this year, beating the sector average by 2% with a student satisfaction rate of 89%. Highest satisfaction for teaching was recorded in the Department of Finance and Management Studies (96%), Anthropology (95%), Art and Archaeology (94%), Law (91%), Development Studies (91%), History (91%) and Linguistics (90%).
Excellent results were also achieved for how well students think teaching is organised and managed. Satisfaction rates in this area increased by 7% to 78%. Satisfaction with access to learning resources showed similar improvements with a rise by 8% to 84%, following a multi-million pound refurbishment of the Library. 88% of our students said they were satisfied with access to both library and IT resources. Student satisfaction relating to two key areas of assessment and feedback and academic support, showed significant improvements, with increases of 7% and 13% respectively.
Professor Nirmala Rao, Pro Director for Learning and Teaching said, “We are pleased to see such high levels of satisfaction among our students. We have outstanding teachers and students who are extremely passionate and enthusiastic. While the majority of our subject areas recorded the highest levels of satisfaction since NSS was first introduced, there is still scope for improvement and we will continue to invest in improving our student experience. The results of this year’s survey show that our support, resources and services are approaching the level of excellence we have come to expect from teaching across all our disciplines. This is a great tribute from our students to our academic and support staff for their inspiration and hard work.”
