Senior lecturer appointed for new SOAS China Institute
5 September 2013
SOAS, University of London has announced the appointment of Dr Jieyu Liu as Senior Lecturer in the SOAS China Institute (SCI).
Dr Liu, a feminist sociologist, specialises in sociology of gender with a regional focus on China and other East Asian societies. She has published widely on gender, sexuality and socio-economic development in China. In addition to working for the SCI, Dr Liu will also be teaching in the SOAS Centre for Gender Studies.
The SOAS China Institute formally launches next month, with ambitious teaching and research goals, as an expert resource for the wider world of business, policy and media.
More than forty China experts from across SOAS’ portfolio of disciplines will drive forward the SOAS China Institute activities and collaborations under the leadership of Professor Michel Hockx.
Dr Liu said: “I am delighted to be joining SOAS. The newly created China Institute, led by Professor Hockx, will be a leading centre of research and teaching; to be involved from the start is particularly exciting. I am really looking forward to meeting and working with all of my new colleagues."
Professor Hockx added: "Dr Liu’s appointment, so soon after the recruitment of Dr Sullivan as Deputy Director, shows how quickly the SOAS China Institute is taking shape. With the expertise of the SCI team now covering political science, sociology, gender studies, and cultural studies, we have an excellent base upon which to build new programmes and new activities. I am particularly grateful to the SOAS Centre for Gender Studies for supporting Jieyu's appointment."
Dr Liu joins SOAS from University of Leeds and will begin her post at SOAS in January 2014.
