Dr Audrey Cantlie
16 December 2013
SOAS, University of London regrets to announce the death of Dr Audrey Cantlie on 6 December 2013.
Dr Cantlie joined the Anthropology Department in 1967 after completing a PhD in Sociology at the London School of Economics. Having spent her early childhood in Assam and returned there to undertake field research, she published a widely read monograph The Assamese: Religion, Caste and Sect in an Indian Village (1984) and contributed seminal articles on the anthropology of Indian religion. Her subsequent work at Kalighat led to some extraordinary papers, anticipating current discussions on ontology and the status of statements regarding the "real".
Later the scholar developed her interest in psychoanalysis and anthropology, a field on which she published and taught especially popular courses in the Anthropology department right up until her death last week.
Dr Cantlie is remembered warmly by friends and former colleagues and students at SOAS, and sorely missed by the participants in her current courses.
The funeral will be held on Friday 20 December at 2pm at St Marylebone Church, Marylebone Road NW1. If you require more information please contact email@example.com.
