SOAS to spark interest in languages among school pupils this week

26 February 2014

In an initiative to widen participation and spark an interest in language learning, SOAS, University of London has organised the Illuminations Festival dedicated to secondary school pupils from years seven to 10.

Taking place on Friday, 28 February, from 10.30am until 3.30pm in the Brunei Building, the event will offer visitors the diversity of languages and culture right in the heart of London through a range of exciting and interactive events and activities.

A hundred students from five schools will attend a rich programme, which includes talks on studying languages at SOAS, on following careers with languages as well as language taster workshops. School pupils will be able to enjoy art workshops on origami, Adinkra painting, Chinese lanterns and Tibetan peace flags.

Renata Albuquerque, Languages Outreach Programme Manager & Capital L – RiL Project Manager, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to open young minds to the world’s languages and cultures and, we hope, to inspire a lifelong interest.”
