SOAS, University of London welcomes the Sanubar Tursun Trio from Chinese Central Asia on 12 May, for three days, at the start of their European tour, supported by the Aga Khan Music Initiative.
Sanubar Tursun is one of the finest singers in Central Asia today; a star performer regarded by many as a symbol of the Uyghur nation. Her delicate and sensuous vocals breathe fresh life into the classical Muqam repertoire as well as traditional songs.
To celebrate her visit to SOAS, and the exhibition 'Living Shrines' by New York artist Lisa Ross, we are holding a mini Sufi shrine festival in the Brunei Gallery on 12 May, 5-7pm, with informal live Uyghur music, films of the Imam Hasim shrine festival in Khotan, short talks, and free Central Asian food, leading into a concert by the Sanubar Tursun Trio at 7pm.
The musicians will be leading workshops in spike fiddles, vocals, and frame drums on 13-14 May.
All events are free and open to all. View the full programme.
