The Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, Mr Shen Yang visited SOAS on the 28th of April 2014 and was welcomed by the director of SOAS, Professor Paul Webley. In the evening Mr Shen Yang was present during the opening reception and the discussion panel of the launch of the SOAS China Institute.
Professor Webley welcomed the Minister Counselor and presented the achievements of the SOAS Chinese Department, and the connections and collaborations that are ongoing between SOAS and Chinese universities at departmental level and various research institutions. Professor Webley also praised the London Confucius Institute for its role in promoting Chinese language learning and providing a platform for cultural and academic exchange.
Mr Shen Yang highly praised the quality of the teaching and research at SOAS, and stated that although this was his first official visit to SOAS, he used to carry out research at the SOAS Library.
Mr Shen Yang stated that SOAS is a leading institution on Asia and Africa related research with a record of outstanding academic publications. Not to mention the largest number of China experts in the UK. Mr Shen expressed his wishes to see further development and cooperation between SOAS and Chinese universities.
At the launch event, the SOAS China Institute Director Professor Michel Hockx extended his welcome to Mr Shen Yang. He introduced the preparation involved in setting up the SOAS China Institute and discussed future research projects and events. Mr Shen Yang offered congratulations on behalf of the Chinese Embassy.
