The London Centre for the Ancient Near East Seminar Series for Autumn 2013 has the theme "Writing and Material Culture". This complex of topics fixed in the interface between archaeology and philology has begun to receive increased attention in recent years, the central theme being the carrier of text as an object with concrete dimensions, material composition, lay-out and use-context in the material world and society. Special mention should be given to the large-scale project “Material Text Cultures. Materiality and Presence of Writing in Non-Typographic Societies” at the University of Heidelberg, and to the conference"Writing as Material Practice: Substance, Surface and Medium", which was held at UCL in the Institute of Archaeology from 15-17 May 2009. Projects associated with material and social aspects of cuneiform writing are underway at the British Museum (Ashurbanipal Library Project, Materialities of Assyrian Knowledge Production).
