Bactrian philology

A Bactrian grammar and dictionary

In 2002 the Leverhulme Trust awarded a two-year Major Research Fellowship to Professor Nicholas Sims-Williams so that he can write a grammar and dictionary of the Bactrian language.

The award of a Leverhulme Research Fellowship will enable Professor Sims-Williams to re-examine the whole corpus of Bactrian texts, many of which were previously regarded as illegible or incomprehensible, and to compile a comprehensive dictionary and grammar, so that the whole material is available to contribute to the study of Iranian linguistics and pre-Islamic Afghan history.
