SOAS Excellence Awards - for September 2012 entry onwards

Description:

The SOAS Excellence Award supports students with financial need who demonstrate academic achievement and potential.

Award value:

September 2014 entry - 90 awards will be allocated as follows:

£8,000 of cash bursaries over the duration of your degree

£2,000 cash bursary in the first year with a £3,000 cash bursary in subsequent years  (£0 in language year abroad)

September 2013 entry - all 70 awards were allocated with the following structure:

£9,000 of fee discounts and cash bursaries over the duration of your degree

60 awards

£2,000 fee discount and £1,000 cash bursary in the first year with a £3,000 cash bursary in subsequent years  (£0 in language year abroad)

10 awards - to those with the lowest household income

£3,000 cash bursary in first, second or third, and final year (£0 in language year abroad)

September 2012 entry - all 60 awards were allocated with the following structure:

£9,000 of fee discounts and cash bursaries over the duration of your degree

£2,000 fee discount and £1,000 cash bursary in first, second or third, and final year (£0 in language year abroad)

These awards (regardless of the year awarded) are not be available during a student's repeat year of study.

Application process:

You will be considered automatically. You do not need to make an application but you must apply for means-tested support from your funding authority via www.gov.uk/student-finance. When you make your application for student support, you must ensure you give consent for your information to be shared with us. If your parents are submitting their financial information, they must also ensure they give their consent. This will allow us to view your details on a portal at the Student Finance website. The portal will only provide the information we need to assess your entitlement to an Award.

Criteria:                                   

  • You must meet or exceed academic entry criteria
  • You must be undertaking your first undergraduate degree (students who currently hold a degree or who are transferring from another Higher Education degree will not be eligible)
  • You must ordinarily be resident in England
  • Your household income must be less than £25,000 as assessed by Student Finance England (SFE)
  • You must accept SOAS' offer of a place firmly by the relevant UCAS deadline

Please note that meeting these listed criteria alone will not guarantee this award as these are limited in number. 

Notification and Payment:

Candidates will be contacted individually, where possible, by email in the summer or during the autumn term. In addition we will start to send out notifications by post from November. If you have not received a letter from us by mid-January, please contact the Student Loans and Bursaries Officer: funding@soas.ac.uk

SOAS will deposit the cash bursary directly into the successful student's bank account as follows:

Cash bursary of £1,000 will be deposited at the end of February.

Cash bursary of £2,000
£1000by end of February - term 2
£1000by end of May - term 3
Cash bursary of £3,000
£1200by end of November - term 1
£900by end of February - term 2
£900by end of May - term 3

We will notify Student Finance directly regarding the fee discount (where applicable) and make any relevant adjustments to your tuition fee loan after enrolment this year.
