AHRC Studentships

The School has been successful in its bid to the AHRC and has been awarded Master’s and Doctoral Studentships for five years from 2009/10.
Students can apply for studentships in the following schemes for 2013/14:
- Doctoral Scheme - for MPhil/PhD programs
- Research Preparation Masters (RPM) Scheme - for masters programs that provide a foundation for doctoral study.
- Professional Preparation Masters (PPM) Scheme - for a masters programs will prepare them specifically for that professional practice (Not applicable for 2013/14)
AHRC eligible subject areas for 2013-14:
SOAS has been offered the following awards:
7 Doctoral awards in the academic year 2013/14 in any of the following eligible subject areas:
- Asian Language and Culture
- History
- History of Art, Architecture and Design
- Linguistics
- Middle Eastern and African Language & Culture
- Religious Studies
4 Masters awards in the academic year 2013/14 in any of the following eligible subject areas:
- Asian Language and Culture
- History
- History of Art, Architecture and Design (unallocated in 2012-13)
- Middle Eastern and African Language and Culture
- Religious Studies
There are two types of studentship awards:
- A full studentship award for UK residents – this covers the cost of approved tuition fees and provides a maintenance grant.
- A fees-only studentship award for EU residents– this covers the cost of approved tuition fees, but no maintenance grant.
The main criteria are:
- Academic – For a Masters award, a minimum of 2:1 honours UG degree will be expected to be achieved. For PhD study, those applying for a doctoral studentship should normally have or be studying for a Master’s degree.
- Subject – your topic must be within the subject areas covered by the AHRC, your Department will help you to assess this.
Candidate Criteria
- Awards are made subject to the Arts and Humanities Research Council's terms and conditions.

Candidate Assessment
- The Assessment Criteria can downloaded from the download box at the top right.
- Studentships are awarded in open competition. Candidates will be assessed using the Assessment Criteria by a Selection Panel.
Scholarship Application Deadline
- Scholarship applications must be received not later than 31 January 2013.
- Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
- Applicants applying for scholarships must also submit an application for admission well in advance. Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.
Scholarship Application Procedure
Scholarship application should be made on the appropriate scholarship application form which is available for download from the download box at the top right.
- If you are applying for the Research Preparation Master's Scheme (RPM), please complete the RPM application form the download box at the top right.
- If you are applying for the Doctoral Scheme, please complete the Doctoral application form at the top right.
Notification of Results
All applicants will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their scholarship application, generally by the end of May. Successful candidates will also be notified by letter.
