SOAS Doctoral Scholarships 2012 (Faculty of Languages & Cultures only)

The SOAS Doctoral Scholarships (4 scholarships in the Faculty of Languages and Cultures) are available for students who are proposing to register full-time or part-time for a research degree at SOAS in the academic session 2012/13.  This scholarship will provide remission of the tuition fees.

New awards offered in 2012 are valid only for the 2012/13 academic session but, subject to satisfactory progress, they may be renewed for the normal duration of a student’s registration ( three years full-time and six years part-time). 

Eligible programmes

Any MPhil/PhD programme (new admissions only) in the following subject areas:

  1. Linguistics - 2 scholarships
  2. Literary, Cultural or Postcolonial Studies (Asia, Africa, Middle East) - 1 scholarships
  3. Islamic Studies- 1 scholarship
  • Part-time programmes are eligible
Candidate Criteria
  •     Open to applicants paying fees at the UK/EU fees rate:
  • Applicants must possess or expect to be awarded a Distinction in their Masters Degree from a UK university. Applicants with a non-UK degree to be adjudged in the top rank by their referees and transcript.
  • Only new research students may apply: those already enrolled on a research degree programme at SOAS are not eligible to apply.
  • Candidates currently completing a Masters degree are welcome to apply.
  • In addition to the SOAS Doctoral Scholarship application, applicants must have submitted a complete application for a place to study at the School at least four weeks before the scholarship closing date in order to be considered for these scholarships.
Candidate Assessment
  • Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by an Advisory Panel consisting of three academic members.
  • The assessment  of your application will be based on the information in your application.  Selectors will be looking at the degree results and also at academic references, statement and other relevant information.
Scholarship Application Deadline
  • Scholarship Applications must be received no later than 5pm on 31 January 2012
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be considered
  • Applicants must have also applied for a place to study at the School preferably four weeks before the scholarship closing date (ie by 4 January 2012) but no later than the scholarship application deadline in order to be considered for this scholarship. The application for a place must be complete.
Notifications of Results

All candidates will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their application, generally by the end of May. Successful candidates will also be notified in writing. If you have not had a response to your application by mid-June, please contact the Scholarships Officer.
