SOAS Doctoral Scholarships (Faculty of Law & Social Sciences only)

The SOAS Doctoral Scholarships (5 scholarships in the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences) are available for students who are proposing to register full-time or part time for a research degree at SOAS in the academic session 2013/14.  This scholarship will provide remission of the tuition fees.

New awards offered in 2013 are valid only for the 2013/14 academic session but, subject to satisfactory progress, they may be renewed for the normal duration of a student’s registration (three years full-time and six-years part time).

Eligible programmes

Any full-time or part-time MPhil/PhD programme (new admissions only) in the following Departments:

  1. Development Studies (one scholarship)
  2. Economics (one scholarship)
  3. Financial and Management Studies (one scholarship)
  4. Law (one scholarship)
  5. Politics and International Studies (one scholarship)
Candidate Criteria
  • Applicants must possess or expect to be awarded a Distinction in their Masters Degree from a UK university. Applicants with a non-UK degree to be adjudged in the top rank by their referees and transcript.
  • Applicants must have an offer of admission to a Research programme at SOAS by the scholarship application deadline.
  • Open to UK/EU applicants only.
  • Candidates currently completing a Masters degree are welcome to apply.
  • Only new research students may apply: those already enrolled on a research degree programme at SOAS are not eligible to apply.
Candidate Assessment
  • Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a Selection Panel consisting of three academic members.
  • The assessment  of your application will be based on the information in your application.  Selectors will be looking at the degree results and also at academic references, statement and other relevant information.
Scholarship Application Deadline
  • Scholarship applications must be received no later than 17:00 (GMT) on 31 January 2013
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be considered
  • Applicants applying for scholarships must also submit an application for admission well in advance.  Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year.  You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.
Notification of Results

All applicants will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their scholarship application, generally by the end of May.  Successful candidates will also be notified by letter.
