Dr. Shao is managing director of Phoenix Chinese News & Entertainment Channel based in London, in charge of the European operation of Phoenix Satellite Television Co. Ltd., a global Chinese media network headquartered in Hong Kong. Previously, he served as an international civil servant at the United Nations in New York City and a lecturer at Beijing Foreign Studies University. He then worked as a Chinese diplomat at the US desk in Beijing and the Chinese embassy in Washington DC. He was a research associate at the International Institute of Strategic Studies, and a senior fellow at Harvard University.
Dr. Shao was educated in China, and subsequently received an M.A. degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a D. Phil in international relations from University of Oxford. While at PCNE, he has received a number of media excellence rewards on behalf of the company, and has been guest speaker on numerous occasions in China, Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the US. He publishes regularly in leading periodicals in China and the West, has contributed to IISS’s Survival, and is the author of several books.
In January 2014 Dr. Shao was appointed Consulting Senior Fellow for China and International Affairs for the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
