In the early 1990s, approximately 100,000 ethnic Nepalis left their homes in southern Bhutan and migrated to UNHCR-administered refugee camps in Nepal. 20 years later, none had been repatriated to Bhutan but more than half had accepted offers of resettlement in third countries.  The process of third country resettlement is now well advanced, with 60,000 resettled in a large number of scattered
locations across the USA and smaller numbers in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and the UK.

Against this background, a workshop on issues and experiences of Bhutanese refugee resettlement is being held on 22nd and 23rd May at SOAS, University of London. The workshop will bring together
researchers from across the globe working on different aspects of the re-settlement process and provide a platform to develop themes for future research, share ideas and explore the potential for working collaboratively.
