Biography

Mandy obtained her PhD in International Relations in 1994. Her research investigated the policy-making processes in international organizations in relation to global drug control by developing a theoretical framework for understanding the dynamics of changing values and norms towards the ‘drug problem’. Her thesis was published as The Politics of Drug Control, by Macmillan Press and in the US by St Martin’s Press.

Her research has influenced her current interests in relation to the impact of virtual learning environments (VLEs) on HEIs and the interface between communication and information technology and the management of change. She has taught in Denmark, Turkey, Mali, and the West Bank. While working in West Africa she became involved in the application of technology to support distant learning provision. On returning to the UK to teach International Relations and Policy Studies at City University she began to explore the possibilities offered by new learning technologies to complement face-to-face teaching, developing a collaborative problem-based approach to teaching online.
