Teaching

In 2008/9 I am teaching two courses in the Department of Linguistics: the first half of Introduction to the Study of Language (Term 1) and Linguistic Typology (Term 2). Students who are enrolled for these courses can access the full syllabus, handouts and assignments from the Blackboard web site.

Research

As a Researcher in Language Documentation in the Endangered Languages Academic Programme (ELAP), I am currently working on a research project concerning the form and distribution of negative constructions across the world's languages. This project has been dubbed NegTyp. Unlike previous work in this domain, the project is designed with sensitivity to the contemporary objectives of documentary linguistics and reflects the need for contextual data in understanding the use of negatives across languages. My PhD research at the University of Manchester focused on Eleme (Ogonoid, Benue-Congo), an under-described language spoken in southeast Nigeria. My thesis, entitled 'Aspects of Eleme verbal morphosyntax', discusses Eleme fieldwork data from a functional-typological perspective, with a focus on participant reference (including logophoric reference and applicative morphology) and tense-aspect morphology. My current research in Eleme concerns the use of applicative morphology in progressive constructions and paradigmatic asymmetries found in the verbal agreement system. I am also working on a typology of cognate objects with Greg Anderson, which includes much data concerning Eleme cognate objects.
