In 2008/9, I am teaching two courses in the Department of Linguistics, namely, Translation Theory (Terms 1 & 2) and Journalistic Translation (Term 1).
I’m also supervising MPhil/PhD students on Translation Studies.
Research
My work on translation studies over the years has included translation curriculum and pedagogy, cognitive and psycholinguistic investigation of translation processes and corpus-based translation research. Funded by a major research grant from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, I carried out a systematic investigation of the social-political needs of translation services in Hong Kong and the representation of such needs in the curricula of various local translation programs. I have also been actively engaged in the cognitive and psycholinguistic investigation of the process of English-Chinese. Particular topics I have worked on in this area include the trustworthiness of think-aloud protocols (TAPs) used as a research instrument in the exploration of the translators’ mental processes of translation, the use of monologue versus dialogue verbal reporting in translation process research involving Chinese research subjects and the issue of how text type might affect the translation process. Secondly, within the framework of corpus-based translation studies, I have examined translation universals in translated Chinese and compared styles of two English translations of the Chinese classic Hong Lou Meng (The Story of the Stone). I am now working on an international collaborative project, involving several UK, Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland universities, to build an English-Chinese Parallel Corpus of Non-Literary Texts and conduct research thereon. In addition, I have taken a keen interest in the methods and principles of translating texts of special genres (e.g. legal, financial and journalistic texts). I have co-authored and co-edited three books, one on financial translation, one on legal translation and one on translation studies, 16 articles in international referred journals and five book chapters. At this moment, I am writing a book on English-Chinese journalistic translation to be published by Hong Kong University Press in 2008.
