Biography

I work on the histories of science, medicine, gender, maritime commerce and cultural interactions in Southeast Asia. I have extensive archival experience and work with primary documentary sources in multiple languages.

Teaching

Research

Social and cultural histories of Asia with special reference to island Southeast Asia.

My research focuses on three broad subject areas:

1. Histories of science, medicine and gender, with an emphasis on comparative regional approaches and transnational linkages.

2. Maritime commerce and the cultural impact of global trade from around 300BCE to 1900.

3. Histories of sensory perception, especially in relation to cities and food.
