My research adopts a political economy approach to address the issue of the role and impacts of international (and, to a subordinate extent, internal) migration in the context of development, with the latter understood as a process of transition to, and expanded reproduction of, the capitalist mode of production. Two country case-studies serve to interrogate and illustrate the theoretical debates: Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau – two lusophone West African countries that currently find themselves at very different stages of the aforementioned transition.
