Accounts of India’s economic growth in the last couple of decades almost unanimously seem to suggest a causal linkage between the growth take-off and Liberalization in the 1980’s. This account seeks to understand the political economy of the relationship between the state and industry to explain the drivers of growth. It will focus on two specific industries – textiles and pharmaceuticals in India.
