Biography

History of the Near and Middle East, especially the Levant; the role of Germany in the Middle East 1871-1945; problems of modernity and tradition; formation of ideologies and identities.

PhD Research

The research explores German cultural relations with Syria and Lebanon during the Weimar Republic (1918 – 1933) and their use as political instruments. Of special interest is the perception of these cultural policies by Syrian and Lebanese population.
