Population mobility has long been associated with the dynamics of HIV transmission. Initial concerns focused on the historical spread of the disease, whereas more recent concerns within the epidemiological and public health literature have focused on the notion that migrant or mobile populations engage in more risky sexual behaviours than non-mobile populations, thus intensifying transmission rates. However, a review of the epidemiological evidence suggests that there is no universal correlation between mobility and risk. Using insights from migration theory, sociological debates around structure and agency, and the need for an approach that conceptualises population mobility as a dynamic process, the aim of the project was to compare and contrast different forms of mobility to understand the underlying socio-economic determinants of flows of people and how engaging in these processes is related to HIV risk
