PhD Research

This research explores the continued controversies of new trade/new growth theory in terms of testing for learning by doing. It adopts an inductive approach to analysis of the relationships between types of merchandise trade, the modalities through which producers engage with trade, and growth processes - accumulation and assimilation - for low-skilled manufactured and high value agricultural goods exporters in Africa and Asia. It will fully develop two case studies, but make reference to the following countries and sectors: Kenya and Ethiopia for cut flowers; Cambodia and Bangladesh for the textile and clothing industry. It tests for learning by doing using an augmented new trade/new growth model and includes a critical review of new export sophistication and product proximity measures.
