Biography
My interest in Japanese history of art began while studying at the University of Glasgow, triggered by the city's long history of home-grown artists influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e and architecture. After taking a Masters degree in Japanese history of art at SOAS, I spent 2 years in Japan as a Monbukagakusho scholar at Tokyo's University of Foreign Studies. During my time in Tokyo, I developed a research interest in Japanese film, and the reoccurance of certain tropes in the representation of the female body in both ukiyo-e and film, most notably at points of crisis in Japan.
PhD Research
An exploration of the presentation of the female body in vernacular visual media at times of crises in the history of modern Japan, which aims to uncover a dialogue of identity anxieties coded in the representation of the female body.
