- Masculinities and shifting concepts and practices of honour among British-born South Asian men: The implications for women
PhD Research
This research aims to explore the attitudes of British-born South Asian men towards the concept of 'honour' and their perceptions of honour-related violence (HRV). The subject of 'honour-related violence' has been hotly debated over recent years by politicians, academics, community leaders, activists and the media alike. However, deliberations have tended to focus on examining the female perspective, positioning women as victims and men as the aggressor, seemingly confirming the commonly-held view of the inherent barbarity of South Asian men. This study aims to give a voice to these men since we cannot fully understand, and thus we cannot wholly eradicate, the occurrence of honour-related violence if we exclude men and masculinities from the debate. However, it must be underscored that it is not the objective of this research to provide justifications for the existence of HRV but to generate a wider knowledge base from which to challenge the practice.
