Financial operations of firms, i.e. active management of company assets and liabilities, are neglected in mainstream economic theory. Understanding these operations is crucial to develop valid economic theory and policy. Therefore, this thesis attempts to conceptualise corporate financial operations while reviewing evidence on firms’ balance sheet management. The focus and the originality of this research lie in the consideration of the emerging market economy (EME) setting, analysing the case of South Africa.
The thesis will argue that contrary to popular belief deep and developed financial markets do not seem to accelerate and support growth and development but rather induce financial fragility.
