PhD Research
My PhD thesis examines the linkages between democratisation and the increase in urban violence in the Maldives. This thesis will attempt to identify and define the types of urban violence that have increased during the democratisation process; examine how and why the identified types of urban violence escalated during the democratisation period; and identify and analyse the democratic mechanisms or conditions which have caused an increase in urban violence during the on-going democratisation process in the Maldives. This thesis contributes to the study of the democracy-violence relationship by examining some of the contemporary debates concerning democracy and violence and attempts to extend the debate further by specifically examining the link between democracy and urban violence. In addition, this thesis provides a case study of the potential challenges and experiences of a small nation-state which had embarked on a democratic transition in 2005.
