My research examines portrayals of ‘queer identities’ in a variety of textual sources as a indication of how identities based on non-normative sexuality or gender positions are constructed, understood and performed in modern-day Vietnam. In particular I am interested in showing how global forces have influenced or are perceived to have influenced the formation of these identities, in how the Vietnamese who refer to themselves as gay, les (from lesbian) or bi have come to understand their own identities through the medium of English terms and to what extent this use of an English-language vocabulary is indicative of processes of imposition, adoption or appropriation of foreign concepts in the modern Vietnamese context.
