Biography
Mr. Shields is undertaking a full-time doctorate at Cambridge University in International Relations; his thesis is examining the impact the media has on political decision-making on the use of force. While continuing his research, he is employed as a part-time lecturer, seminar facilitator and supervisor at both the University of Birmingham (where supports a part-time MA programme on Air Power) and at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London where he supports a module on Global Energy and Climate Policies as part of an MA in Conflict, International Studies and Diplomacy. In September 2011 he was employed by the University of Cambridge as a teacher on a Master of Studies degree, covering modules on International Relations Theory and Security. He is, moreover, a member of the UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff’s Strategic Forum, and is a Research Associate with the UK Defence Forum where he writes book reviews and discussion pieces on contemporary defence and security issues. Finally, late in 2011 he co-founded, with a former member of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a specialist company that offers training in Strategic thinking (www.cambridge-training.co.uk).
