The thesis will set forth the grammatical description of the Tibetan verb on the basis of a new and rigorous empirical foundation. The emphasis shall be on the emergence and development of switch reference systems, subjecthood, and evidentiality from Old Tibetan to Middle Tibetan. The core of the thesis will be a comprehensive description of Old Tibetan on the basis of version A of the Ramayana. On the basis of this description the thesis will trace the development of several components of the grammar both in other Old Tibetan texts and in later Middle Tibetan texts, focusing on the morphology and syntax of the verb, including the clitics and auxiliary verbs.
