- Year of Study:
BiographyPrior to joining SOAS, I was teaching in the media department at Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, Pakistan. I also worked on several film projects, including those I was involved with as a student and teaching assistant in the Art of Film Editing course at the Edit Centre in New York. With a Masters in Journalism and MPhil in Mass Communication, and with journalism and film experience, my interests range from print media to film and television, not only from a research and academic perspective, but also from a practical aspect. My MPhil thesis was a historical and comparative study of film in South Asia, with a focus on the birth, rise and decline of the Pakistani film industry.
My PhD research looks at the Pakistani film industry and its imaginaries, within the set up of the country’s contemporary film and television industries and the social, cultural and political context of Pakistan from 2001 to present. By incorporating the film and television industries, this study highlights the narrative screen culture and audiovisual culture in Pakistan, the content and structure, the imaginaries it attempts to create, and its relationship with local and international forces.
