BA Politics and Journalism & Mass Communication (New York University, USA), MA Journalism (Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK), MPhil Mass Communication (Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan).
Prior to joining SOAS, I was teaching in the media department at Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, Pakistan. I also worked on film projects, including those I was involved with as a student and teaching assistant in the Art of Film Editing course at the Edit Centre in New York. With experience in journalism and film, my interests range from print media to film and television, not only from a research and academic perspective, but also from a practical aspect. My MPhil thesis was a historical and comparative study of film in South Asia, with a focus on the birth, rise and decline of the Pakistani film industry.
My research on new emerging Pakistani cinema not only looks at the new films being made in Pakistan, but also engages with the various themes emerging from within the current evolution of cinema in the country. The aim of this research is to study and understand the developments taking place in cinema in Pakistan today. This includes the increase in the production of Pakistani films, the introduction of new filmmakers; the evolution of the traditional cinema into the digital multiplex, and the local cinema’s relationship with television, Bollywood and other foreign cinemas.
