SEC Results 2005/06

The academic year 2005/06 was the second year of the School's new Student Evaluation of Courses questionnaire.  The results continued to be mainly positive, with particular improvements in the feedback for teaching in tutorials, the section specifically designed for language courses, and also in the section about learning resources.

Where we are doing well

In answering the following questions, over 85% of responses scored 4 or 5 out of a maximum of 5 (i.e. mostly or definitely agreeing):

  • 90% said that they attended lecture sessions regularly;
  • 88% said that lecture sessions were regular and punctual;
  • 88% said that the teachers in their lectures were enthusiastic about what they were teaching;
  • 87% said that tutorial sessions were regular and punctual;
  • 87% said that the teachers in their lectures prepared their teaching thoroughly.

Where we could do better

Those areas below scored less favourably, based on mostly or definitely agree.  It was pleasing, however, to note that all of these questions showed an improvement on the 2004/05 score.

  • 55% said that library resources were sufficient (though this was up 11% from 2004/05);
  • 54% said that they received helpful feedback from teachers about progress on their course (though this was up 2% from 2004/05);
  • 36% said that they received sufficient support and advice from the faculty office (though this was up 10% from 2004/05).

Where we have got better

We are particularly pleased with the following improvements this year:

  • 68% said that online course materials were useful (up 20% from 2004/05);
  • 59% said that they were able to access general IT resources when required (up 20% from 2004/05);
  • 79% said that the grammatical explanations given in their language classes were clear (up 20% from 2004/05);
  • 69% said that the textbooks used in their language classes were very useful (up 20% from 2004/05).
