SEC Results 2006/07

The academic year 2006/07 was the third year of using the machine-readable Student Evaluation of Courses questionnaire.  The feedback given shows a high overall level of satisfaction, and in general reflects well on the School’s teaching and student support.  In particular, the questions about learning resources continued to attract more positive feedback from students.

Where we are doing well

In answering the following questions, over 85% of responses scored 4 or 5 out of a maximum of 5 (i.e. mostly or definitely agreeing):

  • 91% said that lecture sessions were regular and punctual;
  • 90% said that they attended lecture sessions regularly;
  • 89% said that the teachers in their lectures were enthusiastic about what they were teaching;
  • 89% said that the teachers in their lectures prepared their teaching thoroughly;
  • 88% said that tutorial sessions were regular and punctual;
  • 87% said that they attended seminar/tutorial sessions;
  • 86% said that the teachers in their lectures were good at explaining things.

Where we could do better

Those areas below scored less favourably, based on mostly or definitely agree:

  • 56% said that the library resources were sufficient (up 12% from 2004/05, up 1% from 2005/06);
  • 54% said that they were given enough time to absorb what they had to learn (up 4% from 2004/05, down 2% from 2005/06);
  • 54% said that they had received helpful feedback from teachers about the progress of their course (up 2% from 2004/05, no change from 2005/06).
  • 32% said that they had received sufficient support and advice from the faculty office (up 6% from 2004/05, down 3% from 2005/06).

Where we have got better

We are particularly pleased with the following improvements this year:

  • 70% said that online course materials were useful (up 22% from 2004/05) and now more in line with paper-based course materials which show 79% satisfaction;
  • 62% said that they were always able to access general IT resources when required (up 23% from 2004/05);
  • 81% of students said that overall, they were satisfied with the quality of the course (up 4 percentage points from 2005/06).
