How to find a Yoga Class
Check your local Adult Education Institute (Floodlight is the main directory of classes – available in public libraries). Many have yoga classes and teachers will be qualified.
You probably have to enrol for a term or even a year. There should be concessionary rates for students.
Many gyms have yoga classes – sometimes free with gym membership. Teachers should be qualified. There are also yoga centres in London with classes usually available on a drop in basis.
For details of a local Iyengar yoga teacher, contact the Iyengar Yoga Institute (Maida Vale) on 020 7624 3080. They also have classes every day of the week at all levels.
Consider personal recommendations from others who have experience of the teacher.
Search the web but remember there are many different styles of yoga and anyone can set up as a teacher without training or qualifications or even much experience.
Some different approaches
- Iyengar yoga
- British Wheel of Yoga
- Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga
- Sivananda yoga
- Kundalini yoga
- Raja yoga
If you are not sure if an approach will suit you, ask for information about the approach. Some approaches will be physically more energetic, others will focus more on relaxation and meditative practice.
Hatha is a general term which can cover any kind of yoga. It is not in itself a specific approach.
